Present - Fall 2017

After the Summer Classes 2017 STIPGLAS decided to scedule the workshops throughout the whole year. A programme of workshops of 1, 2 or 5 days and training sessions that last approximately 8 till 12 days. A programme including a variety of glass techniques, on different levels and given by teachers from all over the world.

Working with borosilicate glass

taught by Jörg Hanowski (D).

Sa 19th and Su 20th September 2020

Working with borosilicate glass is a completely different experience from working with soft glass. And working with tubes instead of rods is also completely different. You’ll have the opportunity to be exposed to both in this workshop. Under Jörg Hanowski’s expert guidance, you’ll make 3-D fantasy figures using borosilicate tubes. The level of difficulty will depend on your own experience and your progress during the workshop. Because of the individual coaching this workshop is open to all levels from beginners through advanced. There’s room for maximum 8 students and we’ll work on oxygen torches (with O2 tanks!).

Though trained as a technical glassblower, Jörg Hanowski has predominantly made his name in the art world. With his glass objects, including also neon installations, he’s pulled in numerous international glass awards. And further he regularly creates glass works for colleague-artists.
For more information about Jörg Hanowski, visit his website: www.studio-glas.com.

Workshop hours: Sa 19th Sept 11.00 - 18.00 hrs and Su 20th Sept 10:00 - 17:00 hrs.

Training - Working with borosilicate glass, start 13th December 2019

8 Fridays from 11:00 - 18:00;
start: December 13th 2019

taught by Jörg Hanowski (G).

Borosilicate glass is also called hard glass, known for laboratory test tubes and pipettes and still better known for coffee and tea pots which can one minute be used to pour piping hot liquids and the next minute rinsed out under cold water without the glass breaking. Borosilicate glass has, in fact, a low coefficient of expansion and can survive these temperature differences. Because of this, working with borosilicate glass on the oxygen torch is a totally different experience than working with soft glass such as Moretti that can’t handle such wide temperature variations. Borosilicate glass has become known as “A Glass Maker’s Friend” because it doesn’t go flying past the side of your head so easily!

But borosilicate glass offers another challenge: the hollow tube!! Because of its use as a technical glass, borosilicate glass is available in a wide variety of diameters and thicknesses, all produced with scientific precision. Manipulating a glass tube at the torch actually requires completely different skills than for manipulating a solid glass rod. This course is focused on working with the tube and the goal is: a wine glass with a stem! And for the real go-getters: a perfect wine glass with a stem and decoration!!

Students will receive individual guidance during the course. As a result, the course is open to all enthusiasts regardless of their previous knowledge of torch techniques. The first 2 lessons are group lessons focused on working with solid rods. After that, students receive individual guidance and the more advanced students can shift to working with tubes. Simple animal figures are employed to learn techniques such as: “gathering glass”; “making connections”; “pulling points”; “blowing”; etc. At every step of the way, the objective is to achieve perfect results with attention to body posture, consistent dimensions and thickness, control over the glass, etc. Hereby is the level of perfection and complexity – at an individual level – increased more and more. How much a student learns during this course depends not only on their starting level and natural talent but is also highly dependent on the amount of time he or she devotes to practicing and doing homework assignments between classes. In other words: practice makes perfect!!!

Level: 0 and higher (flameworking)

Workshop hours: Friday: 11:00 – 18:00 hrs.

Working days: 13th December 2019, 24th Januari, 7th Februari, 20th March, 3rd and 17th April, 1st and 15th May, 2020

Glass Beadmaking - introduction to working with hot glass

Sa 1st and Su 2nd Febr 2020

taught by JanHein van Stiphout.

This workshop serves as an introduction to working with hot glass through bead making. To make glass beads, the glass is heated at a torch to over 1000°C. This makes the special experience of working with liquid glass accessible to everyone. How pliable is liquid glass? What is the effect of transparent vs. opaque glass? How can this technique be extended to applications other than bead making?

Topics include:
- Making round, conical and cylinder shaped beads.
- Building up a disc.
- Making and using stringers and twisters.
- Placing dots and raking glass.
- Making flowers and using murrini’s.

Hands-on practice will be supported by the necessary theory. This workshop aims to teach skills rather than being focused on producing specific products. It’s intended for beginners.

Workshop hours: from 10:00 – 17:00 (registration is only possible for both days)

Costs: EUR 190.00 (includes materials and the use of necessary tools, lunch and taxes)

Flower Power 1 - Montage techniques

Sa 19th and Su 20st September 2019

taught by Michaela Maria Möller.

Bead making is an enjoyable starting point for manipulating soft glass at a torch. You have a steady grasp on the mandrel. But more is possible within lampworking. For example, forming sculptural pieces (3-D figures) or making semifinished products for further use in a fusing project. For such applications a mandrel can’t be used.
During Flower Power 1, Michaela Möller guides her students toward working off-mandrel with the first step being the assembly technique. For this technique we don’t abandon the mandrel completely. The individual parts that are made completely off-mandrel are put back together with the help of a mandrel into – in this case – flowers. Attention is also given to mixing colors and to pulling multicolor stringers. Level 1 and above.

Michaela Maria Moller was trained at the Glasfachschule in Rheinbach (G) and the Akademie für Gestaltende Handwerke in Aachen (G). She works in several glass techniques and exhibits regurlarly in Europe and the USA. More info about her work at: www.glassart-m.com.

Level: from 1 (flameworking)

Workshop hours: from 10:00 – 17:00

Costs: EUR 240.00 (includes materials and the use of necessary tools, lunch and taxes)

Working with colour and borosilicate glass

Fr 3rd, Sa 4th and Su 5th May 2019

taught by Dr. Julie Ann Denton (UK/CH)

As borosilicate is coloured with a number of heavy metals, silver and gold this alchemical process can sometimes feel like a bit of a mystery when working the glass in the flame. Therefore during this class, we are going to unravel some of the mysteries of how to get what we want from the glass. We shall work with oxidising flames, annealing flames, neutral flames and we will also strike certain colours in the kiln. Whilst we are experimenting with colour we will also work with form and touch on solid techniques appropriate to the members desires in the class. It is likely we will use bridges to help us create complicated forms. We will create contemporised filigrana techniques to create rich colour canes to work from, encouraging depth and reality, opposed to cartoon-like flat representation in our forms. The techniques taught in the class will include the use of colour application, heat/glass control, glass rules, fuming with fine gold & silver, phases of annealing flames from cold to hot and vice versa, how to combat cracking, how to fix glass and structural engineering techniques. If you have a specific project idea in mind, please bring your ideas along and we will endeavour to turn them into a reality. The class will be fluid but at the end you will have a firm idea about how to work confidently with coloured borosilicate.

Level:
Beginners to intermediate.

Workinghours:
Friday: 12:00 - 19:00 hrs.
Saturday: 10:00 - 19:00 hrs.
Sunday: 10:00 - 14:00 hrs.

Costs: EUR 485,- including use of torches / ovens and tools, a basic amount of glass and materials, annealing costs, lunch and taxes but excluding special glass and glass
